Year 6 Reading Homework

Using this passage of text from 'Escape from Shangri-La', compare the way that Cessie's feelings change during the extract:

After keeping watch, he sent the rest of us below deck to get some sleep. No one argued, least of all me. I was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin. I curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once.

A bell was ringing in my ears as I woke. Then I discovered it wasn't my ears at all. It was ringing somewhere above my head. I swung my legs off the bed and ran out of the cabin. I saw Chalky bending over his engines.

'Anything wrong?' I asked.
'Fog,' he said, without looking up. 'Lousy fog.'

Moments later I was up on deck and it was swirling all around me. I couldn't see the bow of the boat at all. Popsicle was at the wheel. Everyone else, including Harry, was on watch all around the boat, like dark statues, each of them wrapped in a cocoon of their own fog. None of them moved. None of them spoke. Popsicle saw me.

'We're listening, ' he whispered.

  • Again, I'm looking for a 3 mark response.
  • Use PEE (point, evidence, explain) to structure your answer.
  • Please read the 'Group Feedback' close to the end of the last piece of homework for advice about making your answers better.

cessie is feeling cold and really tired and she is really happy that she is in her nice and cossy warm bed. She is really alarmed and strugling to work out what is going on. She wants to know what is making all that racket. She is feeling a bit spooky, maybe a bit scared. She could be feeling cold and still in shock.

Cessie's feelings were tired and exhausted. After the alarm bells rang, she was wide awake and worried, because Cessie was bound to get tired and cold after all that time keeping watch. And was awake and worried because she is hoping that every one, including her, will escape from shangri-la...

Cessie was feeling exhausted, tired & cold from keeping watch on deck to being warm & cosy and curled up in her bed from the warmth of the cabin .
Which she soon fell asleep only to be suddenly woken up by a ringing bell in her ear which meant she had to go back up on deck in the Fog & Cold to keep watch with her friends .

Cessie's feelings change three times during this extract. At the beginning she starts off as being tired as she has been keeping watch in the cold. As she was so tired she went into a deep sleep quickly. When she woke up she was confused as she could hear bells but didn't know where they were coming from. When Cessie went up on to deck she then became worried and scared because the fog is all around them and she doesn't know what they are listening for.

1.At the start of the text cessie was feeling tired and exhaugsted because it says in the text that she curled into a ball and fell asleep almost straight away.

2.Then her feelings go to being alert because of the fog on deck that causes them to be more awake and sharp eared.

When cessie went to bed she was tired, exhausted and cold from keeping watch on deck. But when she was woken up in her warm and cosy bed by the ringing bell she was feeling worried and anxious that she had to go back on deck in the fog.She went from being tired and exhausted to worried.

Cessie was feeling tired, exhausted and cold when she went to bed because she was keeping look out on deck. She describes this by saying " i was exhausted" When she was woken up in her warm and cozy bed by the ringing bell she was worried that she had to go back on deck to keep a look out in the fog.You can sense Cessie's concern as she describes the fog "was swirling all around me" although at first she wasnt sure why the bell was ringing.

  8. cessie was feeling cold and tired. i know this because the text reads "I was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin. I curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once." Just the starting part of the text gives out two feelings and at the end he might of been feeling a bit spooked because it is all in short sections and sentences.

Cessie was feeling exhausted and tired( as it said in the piece of writing)Suddenly her feelings changed when she was woken up by the bell.
I think she was feeling scared because of the fog and they needed to be quite .

  10. I think Cessie was exhausted and frozen through because she was longing for the warmth of the cabin. Cessie was confused because there was ringing above when she woke. Scared that what she was feeling because it said they were wrapped in a cocoon of their own fog and that sounds scary.

Cessie's feelings change a lot in the text. She has many emotions starting from feeling tired to being very frightened.

We know that Cessie's feeling's go from tired to very shocked, as the text says that Cessie "fell asleep almost at once". She was then woken up by an unexpected bell which was an alarm. This shocked her but also made her very confused. She was no longer tired as she was woken up by an alarm and was worried that something bad was happening.

At first, Cessie was tired, exhausted and cozy. But when the bell rang, she was alert and wanted to know what had happened. She changes emotion because of the ring of the bell. If it hadn't rang, she wouldn't have changed her emotion.

At the start Cessie is feeling cold, exhausted but also warm;suddenly there is a loud bell and Cessies feeling immediately change, as she is now alarmed, wondering what is going on!Then when the fog is surrounding everyone she feels worried because she can hardly see anyone, plus they can't see ahead to see what coming towards them.

I think that at first, Cessie was feeling very tired and exhausted because it says in the the text that " I was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin. I curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once." Then she started to feel a bit worrried and scared because it says in this page of the story that "
A bell was ringing in my ears as I woke. Then I discovered it wasn't my ears at all. It was ringing somewhere above my head. I swung my legs off the bed and ran out of the cabin. At this point, cessie's mood chanded imedately because she was getting worried about the fog around her and around popsicle. she could not see around her very well.

Cessie's feelings change from positive to negative because of when she was in bed and then when she was asking Popsicle what was wrong.
"I was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin. I curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once." This is when Cessie had a positive feeling because she had curled into herself and then just fell asleep strait away. "I swung my legs off the bed and ran out of the cabin. I saw Chalky bending over his engines. 'Anything wrong?' I asked." This part shows that she had a negative feeling because she didn't know what was happening or why a bell was ringing.

Cessie's feelings are tired and confused when she woke up because it was freezing on the old, wooden deck because the boat was moving side to side gently in the big storm. That is why she felt worrird and scared also all of the mist and fog overnight.

tired." I was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin."Using of the word longing makes you think that she realy wants to do something and I don't think this could have been implied with the use of a less powerful verb.

scared."I swung my legs off the bed and ran out of the cabin."the fact that she ran makes you think that she is trying to get somewhere fast because she does not know what is going on threfore she is scared.

  30. cessie was feeling frightent and was thinking what was going on. then the bell rang and she had to see what was going on

  31. In the begining Cessie was exhausted this was proved because she didn't argue about being sent below and feel asleep almost at once.On hearing the bells she was alarmed because she ran out of the cabin.Going on the deck she seemed anxious because no one was making a sound or moving due to the fog and probably when Popsicle whispered that they were just listening.

  32. I think Cessie felt exhausted at first. I think this because in the extract it says 'curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once'.I think this shows that she is exhausted because it says that she fell asleep almost at once, and you have to be calm and relaxed to fall asleep at once or very tired.

Then later, I think Cessie felt puzzled. I think this because in the extract it says 'A bell was ringing in my ears as I woke. Then I discovered it wasn't my ears at all. It was ringing somewhere above my head.' This shows that she was puzzled because she didn't realise where the sound was coming from at first, and Cessie was not sure about whether it was in her head or in reality.

  33. 1. Cessies feels tired because it says "i was exhausted by now, frozen through and longing for the warmth of the cabin." and it also says in that bit of text that he was frozen. The other bit of the text what shows me Cessie was tired because it says "i curled myself into myself and fell asleep almost at once."

    2. Then near the end i think Cessie feels scared and worried i think this because it says "None of them moved. None of them spoke. Popsicle saw me." and it shows that they were sacred because they did not move.

When she woke up she was confused due to the fact that she did'nt know were all the noise was coming from. Secondly she probaly felt a bit worried because of all the fog and she did not know what popcical was listening for.

I think cessie was feeling tired because it said "he sent the rest of us below deck to get some sleep. 37. Cessie was feeling tired and cold before snuggling up in her cozy, warm bed. When the bells rang, she became shocked and ran up on deck because she was alerted by the alarm. Then she was worried about the layer of fog which was swirling around them. The people were like statues ,because they were absolutely silent and this made her feel rather spooked.
So her feelings, changed from cold and tired then to cozy and warm. Then she was alerted and shocked by the alarm waking her up. Next she was worried and spooked.

  41. At the beginning of the extract, the first feelings are that Cessie is cold and tired. Cessie had just woken up, and was wondering what the mysterious noise was that she heard. "The bell was ringing in my ear as I woke". Then, her feelings turn to shock. I think this is because a peaceful sound turns into an awful sounding bell in the tiny boat."The bell was coming from above my head". The next feeling is that Cessie is feeling cautious. After going to the top of the ship, everyone is keeping a look out for boats. As it was foggy, Cessie thought something weird was going on, so she took things slowly and cautiously.

  42. StripeyPenguin1/24/2013 8:06 pm

I think Cessie feels cold and tired. "longing for the warmth of the cabin" The word longing makes you think she dosn't just want to go to the cabin but it's the only thing she can think about and she really wants to go to sleep.
I think Cessie is also confused. "As I woke a bell was ringing in my ears. Then I discovered it wasn't my ears at all" I think she dosn't know what is going on. "The fog swirled around me. I couldn't see the bow of the boat" These sentences make you think she couldn't see anything and was confused about what was going on.

  60. Group Feedback:

Several good answers used numbers to identify separate points.

In a SATS test, this will help you structure your answer to ensure that you have more than one point. It will also save you time as you won't have to write firstly/secondly etc. rubberduck2 has done this particularly well.

StripeyPenguin has used PEE (point, evidence, explain) very effectively. StripeyPenguin makes two separate points, uses quotes from the text to support those points, and then goes on to explain how the evidence demonstrates the points made. Brilliant! 3 marks!
